Discussion of NIU's Admissions Standards:
Northern Illinois University is a relatively large public university located in Dekalb, Illinois. As the scattergram above illustrates, NIU is a not an overly selective university. The blue and green represent accepted students, so you can see that the great majority of students who got into Northern Illinois University had GPAs of about 2.5 or higher, an ACT composite score above 18, and a combined SAT score (RW+M) above 950. Your chances of being admitted will improve if your grades and test scores are above these bottom ranges, and NIU has many students with grades up in the "A" range.
Around the edges of the graph, you'll notice quite a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) mixed in with the green and the blue. You'll also note also that a few students were accepted with test scores and grades below the norm. This is because Northern Illinois University's admission decisions are often based on more than numerical data. Students whose test scores and grades are below the norm are encouraged to write a personal statement that discusses things such as their leadership experiences, efforts to overcome adversity, and what it is they expect to contribute to the campus community.
The university requires applicants to have completed four years of high school English, three years of science (including at least one lab science), three years of social studies (including U.S. History or U.S. Government), and two years of language, art, or music.
NIU does not offer an Early Decision or Early Action program, and the school has a rolling admissions process. Applicants frequently get a decision about two weeks after applying. Even though applications are accepted up until a few weeks before a semester begins, it is to your advantage to apply early so that you can address any deficiencies in your application and assure that the program you are interested in hasn't filled.
