Discussion of Northern Arizona University's Admissions Standards:
Located in Flagstaff, Arizona, Northern Arizona University is a moderately selective, large, public university. About one out of every five applicants will not get in, and admitted students tend to have grades and standardized test scores that are average or better. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent students who were admitted. You can see that the great majority had combined SAT scores (RW+M) of 850 or higher, ACT composite scores of 16 or higher, and a high school GPA of a "B-" or higher. Note that SAT and ACT scores are not used in the admissions process -- Northern Arizona University has test-optional admissions. This does not mean that standardized test scores don't matter, for the school uses them when awarding scholarships. The university does not use the writing option of the SAT or ACT during the admissions process.
Grades in college preparatory classes are extremely important in the admissions process. The university does not have holistic admissions, so things such as essays and extracurricular activities don't play a role. The Northern Arizona University admissions website outlines a couple paths to admission. For guaranteed admission, you'll need a 3.0 or higher GPA in core academic subjects. You also will need to have completed four years of English and math, three years of lab science, two years of social science and a foreign language, and a year of fine arts. You can be considered for admission if you have a 2.5 GPA in core courses and have no more than one deficiency in the above academic subjects. Applicants with more than one deficiency in core courses will not be considered for admission.
Note that the course requirements for admission can be fulfilled with strong standardized test scores. The English requirement can be fulfilled by a 21 on the ACT English section or a 530 on the SAT critical reading section. The mathematics admissions requirement can be satisfied by a 24 on the ACT math section or a 540 on the SAT math section. The social science and language requirements can likewise be met through various standardized testing options (SAT subject tests, Advanced Placement exam, IB score, or CLEP score). See the NAU webpage on course requirements for all applicants to get the details and most up-to-date admissions information.
Finally, Northern Arizona University competes in NCAA Division I athletics, so athletic talent can play a role in the admissions process. Prospective Lumberjacks should contact the appropriate recruiter for more information.
