L 3-35 Light Tank
The L 3-35 Light Tank was an improved version of the earlier L 3-33, with better armour and an improved engine. The L 3-33 (CV.33) was itself an improved version of the CV.29, an Italian version of the Carden-Loyd Mk IV Tankette.
The early prototypes were designated the Carro Veloce 33/II. It entered service as the Carro Veloce 35 (CV.35) but in the late 1930s was renamed the L 3-35 (light tank, 3 ton, 1935 model).
The L 3-35 differed from the L 3-33 in using bolted armoured plates on the superstructure in place of the welded plates used on the older mdoel. The tank was armed with two 8mm Breda Model 38 machine guns, although a flamethrower version (CV 35 Lf - lancifiamme) was also produced. A command tank version with a radio installed and often with a false superstructure and gun was also produced. Starting late in 1940 a number of L 3 tanks were rearmed with a 20mm Solothurn anti-tank rifle or a 12.7mm Breda-SAFAT heavy machine gun.
The L 3-35 was the main Italian light tank at the start of the Second World War and saw combat during the Italian invasion of France (June 1940), the Italian invasion of Greece (from October 1940) and in the North African desert. A small number was also given to the Italian 8th Army, operating in Russia (where they served alongside a number of L 3-33s and L 6-40s). This force was destroyed in late 1942-early 1943 during the Soviet counterattack around Stalingrad. Like the L 3-33 the L 3-35's small size meant it was easy to manoeuvre, but its thin armour meant it was vulnerable to just about every anti-tank, including the .55 calibre Boys anti-tank rifle in use with the British in the desert. The L 3 series tanks were withdrawn from front line combat in 1942 but remained in use with internal security forces and in anti-partisan operations.

Carro Veloce L3/35 (CV-35)
There were two main differences between the two models. The CV-35's armor was bolted rather than riveted, and the FIAT mod.14 8 mm (0.31 in) twin machine-gun mount was standard. These were later replaced by FIAT mod.34s or Breda mod.38s. There were also minor modifications between models, depending on the parts used and the manufacturer. This new model was mass-produced, and manys CV-33 (renamed L3/33 in 1938) were retrofitted alongside the L3/35 specifications. The L3/35 armor was also slightly heavier, but the vehicle had a more powerful FIAT SVA petrol engine, and the speed was almost unchanged. The twin mount was an ingenious system which made lateral and vertical aiming easy, but in the desert, sand dust tended to jam this mount. The upper part of the tracks was supported by Acacia wooden trails. A large encasing was placed just after the forward wheel to accommodate spare parts. The serie II was different only on minor details.
World War I
The Carden Loyd tankette and its derivatives were adopted by several nations as small tracked vehicles carrying a machine gun for armament. At a time of limited military budgets, tankettes were relatively cheap and functioned as reconnaissance vehicles and mobile machine gun posts. In 1928, the British firm of Vickers-Armstrong started promoting another design by John Carden and Vivien Loyd as the "six-ton tank". Although rejected by the British Army, it was bought by a large number of nations in small numbers. It formed the basis of the Soviet T-26 (around 10,000 built) and the Polish 7TP tank and influenced the Italian Fiat M11/39. The British Army did not use the design as a light tank themselves but a developed version of the Carden Loyd tankette as the starting point for a series of British light tanks intended for use in imperial policing and expeditionary warfare. As the only tank fit for immediate manufacture, it was a key element in the expansion of the British Army in the period leading up to the outbreak of war. 
Throughout the interwar period the US produced only a few hundred tanks. From the end of World War I to 1935, only 15 tanks were produced. Most were derivatives or foreign designs or very poor quality private designs. The Christie designs were among the few better examples, but the US Army acquired only three Christies and did not pursue the idea any further. Budget limitations and the low priority given to the army meant that there were few resources for building tanks. The US Army instead developed and tested tank components such as suspensions, tracks, and transmissions. This paid off when production had to be initiated on the outbreak of war.
World War II
At the start of World War II, the majority of all of the great powers' tank forces consisted of light designs. The most common were the British Light Tank Mk VI, French Renault R35, German Panzer I, Italian L3/35 (classified as a light tank by the Royal Italian Army, a tankette by others), Japanese Type 95 Ha-Go light tank, Soviet T-26, and American M2 light tank.
Germany's armored Panzer force was not especially impressive at the start of the war. In the invasions of Poland and France, the German forces were mostly made up of the Panzer I and Panzer II light tanks. The Panzer I was little more than a training vehicle armed only with machine guns, the Panzer II with a 20 mm cannon. The Panzer division also included some Czech designed light tanks - the Panzer 35(t) and the Panzer 38(t).
American light tank development started with the M2 light tank series. These light tanks were mechanically very reliable, with good mobility. However, they had a high silhouette, and only a few saw combat. The M3 Stuart series was an improvement of the M2 with better armor. The new medium tank just entering production in 1940 was the M2A1. This was a poor design with thin armor and a high silhouette.
The M3 Stuart saw use in the North African Campaign but was relegated to reconnaissance as soon as US-built medium tanks became available. Further light tank development in the war led to the improved M5 Stuart and then included the M24 Chaffee.
The British withdrew their light tank designs from their armoured divisions early in the war, but used some later designs for minor amphibious operations and airborne operations.  In general they used armoured cars for reconnaissance and the last of the light tank designs, the light tank Mk VIII "Harry Hopkins", was only produced in small numbers.
The Japanese made extensive use of light tanks that were much better suited to jungle warfare than larger designs,  such as the Type 95 Ha-Go light tank.
Light tanks continued to be built, but for very limited roles such as amphibious reconnaissance, support of airborne units, and in rapid-intervention forces that were not expected to face enemy tanks. The Soviet PT-76 is a specialized light tank –amphibious with sufficient firepower to engage other reconnaissance vehicles, but very lightly armored. The US fielded small numbers of the M41 Walker Bulldog with a high velocity 76mm gun, and better armor, but it suffered from range limits, and its weight was too heavy for most air transport of the day. The US M551 Sheridan had similar strengths and weaknesses, but could also be airdropped, either by parachute or LAPES. The French had their AMX-13 light tank, which was designed for its capability to be quickly air-dropped for use with paratroopers and also able to support lightly-armed infantry and perform force-reconnaissance effectively.
The British FV101 Scorpion, the fire support variant of the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) series of vehicles that replaced armored cars in British service, has been described as a light tank and was sold to many smaller nations. Another light tank in the Cold War era was the Swedish IKV 91 armored vehicle. It had a low-pressure 90mm gun, strong armor against 20mm grenades, and it was fully amphibious.
Light tanks, such as the PT-76, continue to play a small role in tank warfare, although many are losing favor to cheaper, faster, and lighter armored cars. The light tank still fills an important niche in many armies, especially for nations with airborne divisions, Marine Infantry, or those without the resources and funding for main battle tanks. They have important advantages over heavier tanks in Southeast Asia and other nations in the Equatorial region. Their compact dimensions and short to nonexistent barrel overhang lets them maneuver through thick rain forests, and their weight reduces the risk of getting stuck in mud, and simplifies recovery of stuck or damaged tanks. This makes the light tank the preferred choice for infantry support in Equatorial nations. Post–Cold War light tanks include the Stingray light tank, Ajax, ZTQ-15 and the M8 AGS. Light tanks based on infantry fighting vehicles chassis include the CV90105T, 2S25 Sprut-SD, Tanque Argentino Mediano, ASCOD LT 105, and Harimau.

The L 3/35 tankette was Italy’s main battle tank until mid-1941, when the medium tanks began to be available in quantity. This tank belonged to the I battalion of the 32nd tank regiment (reggimento carristi), part of the 132nd Ariete armoured division as shown by the numbers on the rear plate of the fighting compartment. The new-type tactical symbol on both hull sides, introduced in 1938, denotes the 4th platoon (four white bars) of the 2nd company (blue symbol), with the tank individual number (‘2’) atop. Licence plates, in metal, were common on italian tanks until the end of the war. The tank is camouflaged overall dark green, a colour introduced in 1933–35 along with the CV 33-35 tanks, with small patches of dark earth brown added. In 1940 the Ariete armoured division was deployed in Italy and was then sent to Libya in february 1941, following the british offensive that ended at Beda Fomm. The L 3/35 tanks still equipping Ariete’s three tank battalions retained their european camouflage (although repainted sand later on), but had the back plate of the engine (with the exception of licence plate, recovery hook and tactical markings) repainted white as a way to make tanks visible during night convoy marches.

In addition to seeing action in the Second Italo-Abyssinian War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Spanish Civil War, the Slovak-Hungarian War, and the Anglo-Iraqi War, the L3 was used almost everywhere that Italian troops fought during World War II. L3s were found on the Italian/French border, North Africa, Italian East Africa, the Balkans, USSR, Sicily, and Italy.
The combat performance of the L3s during the interwar period was poor. On at least two occasions during the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, L3s were put out of action by massed infantry attacks. In the Spanish Civil War, L3s of the Corps of Volunteer Troops (Corpo Truppe Volontarie, or CTV) were totally out-classed by the T-26 and BT-5 tanks provided to the Republican forces by the Soviet Union. Fortunately for the Hungarians, the L3s were not a factor in their brief war with Slovakia.
On 10 June 1940, when Italy entered World War II, the Royal Italian Army (Regio Esercito) possessed only about one-hundred M11/39 medium tanks in two tank battalions. L3 tankettes still equipped all three Italian armoured divisions, the tank battalions in the motorized divisions, the light tank squadron group in each "Fast" (Celere) division, and numerous independent tank battalions.
On 22 March 1941, two Iraqi L3s were reported to have been put out of action near Fallujah during the Anglo-Iraqi War.
More than 40 captured L3 tankettes were used by the Greek Army during the Greco-Italian War, fought from 1940 to 1941, and were used to equip the 19th Mechanized Division, although they did not take part in combat with the latter. After the invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece in April 1941, L3 tankettes were also captured by the Yugoslav and Greek resistance forces. From 1941, some L3 tankettes were given to the German puppet government of the Independent State of Croatia (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska, or NDH).
Though numerous, Italy's tankettes proved to be outclassed from the start and also proved to be of low tactical value. They were vulnerable to the British Boys anti-tank rifles.  Other than those used for occupation duties in the Balkans and elsewhere, few L3s remained in front line service past the end of 1940. After the Italian armistice with the Allies in 1943, L3 tankettes were used by German Army forces and by the pro-Nazi National Republican Army of the Italian Social Republic. Hungarian L3s had by this point been issued to the Gendarmerie and 10 saw combat in Budapest and were destroyed in the fighting to reclaim the Racecourse Airfield.

Type 94 TK variants and derivatives
The Type 94s were relatively homogeneous, as they were built by the same contractor, Hiro Motor Company. The most notable difference is the suspension system, with the first two models differing only by having a small or big idler wheel, while the last had a revised suspension and longer chassis, now 3.35 m (11 ft) long. Other variations include the machine-gun model, with or without protective mantlet, and minor finishing details and equipment, like searchlights projectors and tools fixations.
The Type 94 differed from other tankettes by having a towing device installed and a tracked trailer that carried supplies. A single prototype was tested with a diesel engine, placed on the right, with the driver displaced to left side of the hull. Trials and experiments led to the development of the Type 97 Te-Ke, which succeeded it. The TK chassis was used for several variants, including a Disinfecting Vehicle, Gas Scattering Vehicle, Pole Planter, and Cable Layer.

The 3.7-cm PaK 35/36 ("PaK" for "PanzerAbwehrKanone") was the standard-issue anti-tank cannon of the Wehrmacht by the time of the German invasions of 1939. Like other German systems in development during the 1930's the PaK 35/36 was field tested in the Spanish Civil War and with good results. The PaK 35/36 proved the importance of portable crew-served anti-tank weapon systems, particularly in these early campaigns. But by 1940, progressively thicker armor had begun appearing on British, French and Russian enemy tanks, forcing the light-caliber PaK 35/36 system to quickly fall out of favor as a frontline tank killer. Development by the Rheinmetall company of this dedicated anti-tank cannon for the German Army began as early as 1925. 14,459 PaK 35/36 systems were reportedly delivered with production beginning in 1928.
The PaK 35/36 was a light battlefield weapon relatively easily maneuvered into position by its crew and towed to hotspots via pack animal or vehicle. Its relatively small size also allowed for concealment by her crews, an advantage when ambushing unsuspecting enemy vehicles. The main force behind the PaK 35/36 was its potent 37mm L/45 barrel nestled within an angled armored shield straddled on either side by two road wheels and anchored by two split-trail tubular legs. Wheels were initially of the spoked wheel-type for improved horse traction as the German Army was still relying heavily on pack animal-towed artillery at this point in history but these eventually gave way to steel wheels with pneumatic tires in 1934, now making the PaK 35/36 system suitable for towing via vehicle. The crew of three remained relatively exposed - save for the shield and any other natural protection - when loading and firing the weapon.
Ammunition types ran the gamut of armor piercing, high velocity, high explosive and hollow charge type projectiles. Elevation was limited to -5 t +25 with a traverse of 60 degrees. Muzzle velocity was a reported 2,500 feet for armor piercing rounds and 3,400 feet for HVAP and APCR projectiles. The effective range was about 2,000 feet (other sources report a much lower effective range).
On the West Front, the PaK 35/36 excelled against the lightly armored vehicles found in the Spanish Civil War and proved equally potent against the Polish defense forces years later. The weapons reach would soon hit its ceiling when facing off with the British Matilda II and French Char B1 heavy tanks - PaK 35/36 projectiles ricocheting off the thick armor of these steel beasts. On the East Front, the PaK 35/36 was still in frontline service in 1940 despite its official replacement by the 5cm PaK 38 towed artillery series. It did, however, still prove effective against the Russian BT-7 and T-26 series of light tanks but the arrival of the stout T-34 medium series (and even the lumbering heavy KV-1 and KV-2 models) rendered the PaK 35/36's usefulness wholly obsolete. Its ineffectiveness by this point had garnered the PaK 35/36 the adequate nickname of "Heeresanklopfgerat", translating to "army door-knocker".
Attempts were made to shore up the ineffectiveness of the PaK system by introducing a new projectile type into the mix - the armor-piercing "Panzergranate 40" featuring a wolfram core. Unfortunately in practice, the new round failed to provide the added punch and so an even newer projectile was devised - the "Stielgranate 41" - this with a hollow charge and stabilizing tail plane. Fielded in 1942 with the PaK 35/36 and its new projectile was of some benefit though the low muzzle velocity of the PaK 35/36 barrel itself meant that the crew needed to be some distance closer to the enemy tank target than was deemed comfortable.
As a whole, production of the PaK 35/36 was stopped from 1942 onwards though - by sheer surplus - the weapon was fielded in quantity while other larger caliber weapons were being designed and put into production alongside her. The PaK 35/36 did prove useful in an auxiliary role, specifically when mounted on mobile platforms such as the SdKfz 250 and SdKfz 251 half-tracks (when fielded in the light anti-armor support role). Thanks to the weapon system's portability, Fallschirmjager ("parachute") units were also issued this anti-tank cannon along with garrison and training units. At any rate, the PaK 35/36 secured its legacy by introducing many-a-nation to a proven anti-tank weapon from which to design their own successful versions from.
